Can you imagine a city without a single Tesla (TSLA) - get the Tesla report. Considering how famous they've become since Elon Musk founded his company in 2003, it might seem like a long time ago.
But as Reuters first reported, a county in northern China is making it happen this summer.
Beidaihe District will ban all Tesla vehicles from entering the area for the next two months. Home to beach resorts in northern Hebei province, it borders the Bohai Sea coast and is home to approximately 74 million people.
Why is this county banning Tesla?
The reason for the ban isn't to maintain a quiet, car-free beach, but the fact that Beidaihe hosts a top-secret China's top leaders summit every year.
Events are always shrouded in secrecy - especially from foreign observers. Exact dates are never announced, and each year reports of them surface only after the summit has already taken place.
“Apparently for [China's top leaders] it's an annual break to switch off and relax on the long beach of a legendary northern resort town, but it's also the country's most powerful. It’s also an opportunity for people to have fun and share time with log rolls and gossip – beat each other and has become one of the most watched informal events on the country’s political calendar,” said 2020. William Cheng, a journalist for the South China Post in "State Affairs," writes. However, Tesla, which has disbanded its public relations team, could not be reached for comment.
